Intuition / spiritual exploration
A friend comes to mind just before they call. A dream stays with you through the morning. During a reading, a single image seems to put words to something you have been feeling.
If you believe in psychic awareness, moments like these can invite curiosity about your sixth sense. You do not have to turn every impression into a prediction—or dismiss the personal meaning it holds. A thoughtful starting point is to notice what happened, explore what it means to you and decide how to respond.
What do psychics mean by a sixth sense?
In psychic and spiritual traditions, a sixth sense is a way of describing awareness believed to extend beyond ordinary sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. A reader might speak of impressions, energy, inner knowing or a connection with spirit. These are spiritual interpretations, and not every tradition uses the same language.
In everyday conversation, intuition can also mean a hunch: you recognise a pattern or arrive at an impression before you can explain why. The two meanings can overlap in someone’s experience. For example, you might notice a friend’s change of tone and also understand your response through your spiritual beliefs. Our guide to intuition and hunches explores that distinction.
An impression can be valuable to reflect on without its source being settled. A vivid feeling alone does not establish what will happen or what someone else thinks.
Four ways intuitive impressions are described
The “clair” terms give people a vocabulary for experiences that can be difficult to put into words. They are descriptions used in spiritual practice, not a scorecard you must complete.
- 1ClairvoyanceInner images
- A picture, colour or scene in the mind’s eye. A doorway, for example, might become a symbol for an opportunity you are considering.
- 2ClairaudienceInner words or sounds
- A phrase, remembered lyric or inward impression that someone interprets as guidance. This is different from assuming an unexplained external voice is a message.
- 3ClairsentienceFelt impressions
- An emotional or bodily feeling given spiritual meaning. Start with “I feel uneasy” rather than deciding what another person feels.
- 4ClaircognizanceA sense of knowing
- An impression that arrives without a clear chain of reasoning. Ask what the idea invites you to explore, and what would need checking.
Some traditions also use clairalience and clairgustance for experiences associated with smell and taste. You can read about all six clair-sense terms without needing to identify a dominant gift.
Where do auras and spirit guides fit?
An aura is described in some traditions as a field or colours surrounding a person. A spirit guide is understood as a guiding presence or source of spiritual wisdom. These are related beliefs, rather than extra senses everyone must experience. If a reader uses these terms, ask what they mean in that reader’s practice.
Remote viewing is another, different term: an attempt to describe a distant or hidden target without ordinary access to it. It is not simply another name for a meaningful hunch. Being curious about psychic awareness does not require accepting every claim made under its umbrella.
Try a gentle sixth-sense reflection
Choose an ordinary question with no urgent stakes, such as “What would make this weekend feel restorative?” Leave medical, legal and financial decisions out of the exercise. There is no need to contact a spirit, force a sign or make something unusual happen.
Sit somewhere comfortable for a brief pause. You may keep your eyes open. Notice any word, image, memory or feeling that arises; if nothing does, that is a perfectly usable observation too.

-
Notice: what came to mind?
Write the impression in its first form. “I pictured a quiet garden” preserves more detail than immediately deciding “I must move house.” Add the date and what was happening around you.
-
Reflect: what meaning am I giving it?
Consider your personal associations alongside ordinary clues. A garden might mean rest, privacy, growth or simply a place you saw recently. You can hold more than one possible interpretation.
-
Choose: what is a grounded next step?
Pick something small and under your control: take a walk, ask a question, check a detail or make time to think. A useful next step should still make sense if your first interpretation changes.
If you enjoy keeping a journal, leave the original entry unchanged and add later notes separately. Include quiet days, unclear outcomes and impressions that did not fit. The record is there to help you understand your experience, not pressure you to find a message in everything.
Do you need cards, crystals or meditation?
No particular object is required to explore intuition. You might enjoy tarot or oracle cards as a symbolic prompt, or prefer a few written questions. If you use cards, describe the image first, then your associations: “This figure is looking toward the horizon” is different from “I am about to receive an offer.”
A pendulum or crystal may belong to your personal ritual, but it is not necessary to buy equipment to begin. You can set your own spending limit and use materials you already have.
Meditation can be part of a spiritual routine, though it is not a guaranteed route to psychic ability. Keep a short practice optional and stop if it makes you distressed. NCCIH’s overview of meditation discusses its limitations and safety. If you prefer attention to your surroundings, our gentle grounding practice offers a different place to begin.
Bring your curiosity into a psychic reading
A conversation with a reader can help you explore the spiritual language you connect with. Before booking, ask whether they work through cards, intuitive impressions, mediumship or another method. A clear explanation helps you choose an experience you actually want.
Three questions worth taking with you
- “When you say you receive an image or feeling, how do you interpret it?”
- “Can we explore the themes around my question without treating one outcome as fixed?”
- “If something does not fit, can we leave it open rather than force a meaning?”
You might focus on a relationship pattern, a transition or a choice you are considering. Keep another person’s privacy in view: an impression about them is a reason for a respectful conversation, not a substitute for their own words or consent.
Confirm the format, full cost and any topic limits before the session. Our psychic-reading preparation guide helps you shape your questions, while the quality reading checklist explains the practical standards to look for.
Let spiritual exploration support everyday life
You can value intuition while continuing to make decisions with reliable information and appropriate professional support. A reading should not diagnose illness, settle a legal issue, direct an investment or decide another person’s consent. No reader needs authority over your choices for a session to feel meaningful.
Ordinary inner thoughts, imagination and dreams are different from unexplained voices or visions that seem externally present. If that happens, seek medical advice rather than assuming spiritual contact. The NHS guidance on hallucinations explains when to get help. For voices directing harm, sudden confusion, rapidly worsening symptoms or immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
There is no deadline for deciding what a sixth sense means to you. Let the practice leave room for curiosity, relationships, ordinary pleasures and the freedom to change your mind.
Sixth-sense questions, answered
Choose a question to open its answer.
1. What does sixth sense mean in psychic readings?
It is a spiritual term for intuitive awareness beyond the familiar senses, often described through images, inner words, feelings or a sense of knowing. Different readers understand it differently.
2. Is a sixth sense the same as intuition?
The words overlap in everyday conversation. Intuition can mean a hunch or quick understanding; sixth sense usually adds a spiritual interpretation. Ask which meaning a reader is using.
3. Does a strong hunch mean I am psychic?
A hunch may feel significant, but its strength does not identify its source or establish a psychic ability. You can explore it without deciding on a label.
4. What are the main clair senses?
Common terms include clairvoyance for inner imagery, clairaudience for inner words or sounds, clairsentience for feelings and claircognizance for a sense of knowing. Some traditions also describe clairalience and clairgustance, associated with smell and taste.
5. Can I explore intuition if I do not see visions?
Yes. You can work with an ordinary feeling, a question, a dream or a symbolic image. You do not need unusual sensory experiences to begin reflecting.
6. Do I need tarot cards, crystals or a pendulum?
No. These are optional tools within particular practices. A quiet pause and a few written observations are enough for the reflection exercise in this guide.
7. Can meditation strengthen my sixth sense?
Meditation can be part of a personal spiritual practice, but it is not a guaranteed way to develop psychic abilities. Keep it comfortable and optional, and stop if it makes you distressed.
8. How can I tell intuition from worry?
There is no dependable rule based only on how a feeling sounds or feels. Note the impression, consider what you already know, and choose a small step that remains sensible if your interpretation is wrong.
9. Can dreams contain spiritual meaning?
You may explore a dream through your own beliefs, symbols and associations. Write down what you remember before adding an interpretation; meaning is not the same as a confirmed prediction.
10. What should I write in an intuition journal?
Record the date, the original impression, the context, your possible interpretation and any later outcome. Keep uncertain results and impressions that did not fit, not only apparent matches.
11. Should I act immediately on a psychic impression?
Not simply because it feels urgent. For an ordinary low-stakes matter, pause and check what you can. For immediate safety concerns, take practical protective action and use appropriate help rather than waiting for a sign.
12. Can a reader tell me what someone else secretly feels?
An interpretation is not verified access to another person’s thoughts. Use it to consider your own questions and choices, while respecting what the other person actually says and consents to.
13. How do I ask a reader about their intuitive method?
Ask how they receive and interpret impressions, whether they use tools, and how they handle uncertainty or an image that does not fit. Confirm the format, price and topic limits before booking.
14. What if I start hearing voices or seeing things others do not?
Seek medical advice rather than assuming a spiritual source. If there is immediate danger, voices directing harm, sudden confusion or rapidly worsening symptoms, contact local emergency services.
15. What if an exercise produces no impressions?
Nothing needs to happen on demand. You can write that the exercise felt quiet, return to an ordinary activity and try again another day only if you want to.

While I respect differing views on psychic abilities, I argue that these so-called powers should be approached with skepticism. Anecdotal experiences don’t prove anything. Let’s not forget the importance of critical thinking in our exploration of such claims.
Honestly, this whole sixth sense thing sounds like a bunch of nonsense. Relying on vague spiritual ideas instead of concrete evidence can lead people astray. We need more science and less superstition in our lives.
The distinctions between clairaudience, clairvoyance, and clairsentience are intriguing! It’s fascinating how these concepts connect with our understanding of consciousness and energy. There’s so much more to explore in this realm of psychic ability.
“So you’re telling me that if I meditate enough, I’ll start hearing messages from spirits? Sounds like a great way to have imaginary conversations! Maybe I’ll ask them about winning the lottery.”
“Haha! But wouldn’t it be even better if those spirits could help us find our keys when we misplace them? Now that’s a service I could get behind!”
“This whole idea of connecting with spirit guides sounds cool and all, but how do I know mine isn’t just an overly attached ghost who won’t leave me alone? That sounds more exhausting than enlightening!”
“If everyone has a sixth sense, does that mean my cat is secretly judging my life choices? Because she definitely gives me some serious side-eye when I’m binge-watching reality TV shows.”
“Great, just what we need—more people claiming they can talk to spirits. Next thing you know, we’ll have someone offering ‘spirit consultations’ on TikTok for $9.99 a minute!”
This article opened my eyes to concepts I had never considered before! The idea that we all possess a sixth sense is fascinating, and I’m eager to explore my own intuitive abilities. I feel inspired!
